France

France gave cinema its first public screening, with the Lumière brothers in 1895, and its first fantasy, with Méliès. Between the wars came poetic realism, and after the war a critics' revolt: the New Wave of the late 1950s made the director an author and the camera lighter and freer. French cinema is supported by state funding, a strong film-club and critics' culture, and a long habit of defending cinema as art.
