Maurice Pialat

Contemporary European Art Cinema

Born in 1925 in Cunlhat in the Auvergne and dying in 2003, Maurice Pialat first trained as a painter and came to film in his thirties. His films are raw, unsentimental portraits of family, couples and the working class, shot with long takes and improvised performances, and he was famously difficult with actors and producers. Among them are We Won't Grow Old Together (1972), Loulou (1980), À nos amours (1983) and Van Gogh (1991). Under the Sun of Satan (1987) won the Palme d'Or, to boos from the audience, and he said in his acceptance speech 'If you don't like me, I don't like you either.'
