Born in Bordeaux in 1913 and died in Monte Carlo in 1996, René Clément began with short documentaries and with the Resistance film La Bataille du rail (1946), about railway workers sabotaging German transports, which was made with the real workers. His Forbidden Games (1952), in which two children bury animals in a makeshift cemetery during the exodus of 1940, won the Golden Lion and an honorary Oscar. He also made Gervaise (1956), after Zola, and Purple Noon (1960), the first adaptation of The Talented Mr Ripley, with Alain Delon, and later large international productions such as Is Paris Burning?
