Plot
Michel, a young man in Paris, begins to pick pockets for the thrill of it, convincing himself that gifted people may stand above the law. He practises with a small group of experts, while neglecting his dying mother and avoiding the police inspector who suspects him. Robert Bresson's 1959 film, with non-professional actors and an austere style, is a spiritual study of guilt and redemption.
Sinekatalog’s take
Robert Bresson's spare study of a young thief is an austere masterpiece of film grammar. Close-ups of hands at work are balletic, and the quiet ending is surprisingly moving.Sinekatalog’s own editorial review – not a user or critic quote.
