Born in Chappes in 1912 and dying in 1982, Marcel Camus was an assistant to Jacques Becker and Luis Buñuel before directing. Black Orpheus (Orfeu Negro, 1959), which retold the Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice among the carnival of Rio de Janeiro's favelas, to a bossa nova score by Antonio Carlos Jobim and Luiz Bonfá, won the Palme d'Or and the Oscar for foreign language film. It brought Brazilian music to a global audience. His later work was less known.
