Born in 1961 in Melle, in western France, and dying in 2024, Laurent Cantet studied at IDHEC and began in television. His films examine work, class and group dynamics, often with non-professional actors. Human Resources (1999) and Time Out (2001) deal with the world of employment, and Heading South (2005) with sex tourism in Haiti. The Class (2008), an adaptation of a schoolteacher's memoir and made with real pupils in a Paris middle school, won the Palme d'Or, the first French winner in 21 years.
