Born in Thumeries, France, in 1932 and died in 1995, Malle began as an assistant to Jacques Cousteau before directing his first feature at twenty-five. He worked in France and the United States and moved between genres, from thrillers to comedies to memories of the war years, always with a curious, independent eye.
