Late 1950s – 1960s

French New Wave

Young critics pick up cameras, shoot on location and break the rules of continuity.

In the late 1950s a group of young critics from the magazine Cahiers du cinéma picked up lightweight cameras and made the films they had been arguing for. Truffaut's The 400 Blows and Godard's Breathless (1959–60) shot in real streets, used jump cuts, handheld camera and natural light, and treated the director as an author with a personal voice. Resnais, Rohmer, Rivette, Chabrol, Varda and Demy added their own variations, from memory puzzles to wry comedies of manners. The movement lasted barely a decade, but its ideas about authorship and low-budget freedom shaped independent cinema everywhere.
