Plot
In Hiroshima, fourteen years after the bomb, a French actress who is making a peace film has a brief affair with a Japanese architect. As they talk, she is haunted by the memory of a love in the French town of Nevers, with a German soldier killed at the liberation, and their personal stories merge with the memory of the city. Alain Resnais's 1959 film, with a script by Marguerite Duras, is a landmark about memory and forgetting.
Sinekatalog’s take
Resnais's French New Wave landmark has a French actress and Japanese architect talk through memory and trauma. Poetic, fragmented and daring in its editing, it reshaped how cinema handles the past.Sinekatalog’s own editorial review – not a user or critic quote.
