Jacques Demy

French New Wave

Born in Pont-Château in 1931 and died in Paris in 1990, Jacques Demy was linked to the French New Wave and the Left Bank group of Agnès Varda, whom he married. His films create a heightened, colourful world of love, chance and coincidence, often sung throughout. The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (1964), with music by Michel Legrand, won the Palme d'Or and made Catherine Deneuve a star. He also made The Young Girls of Rochefort and Donkey Skin.
