Plot

In the French port of Cherbourg, seventeen-year-old Geneviève, who works in her mother's umbrella shop, falls in love with Guy, a garage mechanic. When he is called up for military service in Algeria, she discovers she is pregnant and, under pressure, accepts a rich suitor. Jacques Demy's 1964 film, with every line sung to Michel Legrand's score and Catherine Deneuve, and in vivid colours, won the Palme d'Or at Cannes.

Sinekatalog’s take

Jacques Demy's candy-coloured musical is entirely sung, telling a bittersweet young love story. Michel Legrand's score and the pastel wallpaper are unforgettable, and the snowy ending is quietly devastating.Sinekatalog’s own editorial review – not a user or critic quote.
