Born in Bois-Colombes in 1925 to a Jewish family, Claude Lanzmann joined the French Resistance at seventeen, later became editor of Jean-Paul Sartre's journal Les Temps Modernes and opposed the French war in Algeria. His film Shoah (1985), about nine and a half hours long, is an oral history of the Holocaust made without any historical footage, using only testimony and present-day shots of the sites. He returned to the material in Sobibor, 14 October 1943, 4 p.m. (2001), The Last of the Unjust (2013) and Shoah: Four Sisters (2018). He died in Paris in 2018.
