Plot

In a ruined, hungry France, the tenants of a Paris apartment block live above a butcher who keeps them fed with meat of a very particular kind. When Louison, a gentle former circus clown, arrives to work as the handyman, the butcher's shy daughter Julie falls for him and sets out to save him, with the help of an underground band of vegetarian rebels. Marc Caro and Jean-Pierre Jeunet's 1991 first feature is a dark comedy of rust, pipes and clockwork, and won the César for best first film.

Sinekatalog’s take

A cannibal black comedy built like a clockwork toy, where every pipe, lift and cello bow becomes part of the joke. It is cruel and tender at once, and the debut that gave French cinema a new visual language.Sinekatalog’s own editorial review – not a user or critic quote.
