Jean-Pierre Jeunet

Contemporary European Art Cinema

Born in Roanne in 1953, Jean-Pierre Jeunet taught himself filmmaking, made animated and live-action shorts, and met Marc Caro in the 1970s. After directing music videos and commercials he co-directed Delicatessen (1991) and The City of Lost Children (1995) with Caro, then went to Hollywood for Alien: Resurrection (1997). Back in France he made Amélie (2001), a worldwide success with Audrey Tautou as a shy Montmartre waitress who quietly arranges other people's happiness, nominated for five Academy Awards. He followed it with A Very Long Engagement (2004), Micmacs (2009), The Young and Prodigious T.S. Spivet (2013) and Bigbug (2022). His films share saturated colour, exact framing, inventive gadgets and a company of regular actors, above all Dominique Pinon.
