Born in Metz in 1933 and dying in 2022, Jean-Marie Straub made films with his partner Danièle Huillet (1936-2006), who co-directed all of them. Having left France to avoid the Algerian war, they worked mainly in Germany and Italy and made about two dozen films between 1963 and 2006. All were adapted from existing works, including novels, operas, plays and political writings, and were austere, with direct sound and long takes. In 2006 they received a special prize at Venice for 'the invention of cinematic language in its entirety'.
