Henri Colpi

Contemporary European Art Cinema

Born in Brig, Switzerland, in 1921 and dying in 2006, Henri Colpi was first a film editor, cutting Alain Resnais's Hiroshima mon amour and Muriel, with their fragmentary time structures. His own debut feature, Une aussi longue absence (The Long Absence, 1961), written by Marguerite Duras and Gérard Jarlot, is about a Paris café owner who thinks a tramp is her husband, missing since the war. It shared the Palme d'Or at Cannes in 1961. His later films included Codine (1963) and Heureux Anniversaire.
