Born in Paris in 1905 and died in 1934, aged 29, Jean Vigo made only four films, three short and one feature. His father, the anarchist Miguel Almereyda, died in prison in mysterious circumstances when Jean was twelve. À propos de Nice (1930) is a satirical city symphony, Zéro de conduite (1933) a poetic rebellion in a boys' boarding school that was banned in France until 1945, and L'Atalante (1934) a lyrical love story on a river barge. He died of tuberculosis weeks after L'Atalante was released in a cut-down version. His work has inspired generations of filmmakers, notably Truffaut.
