L'Atalante

1934 · 1 h 29 min
Directed by Jean Vigo

Cast

Michel Simon Dita Parlo Jean Dasté

Plot

Jean, captain of the barge L'Atalante, marries Juliette, a village girl, and takes her aboard, where they live with the strange old Père Jules and a cabin boy. Juliette dreams of Paris, and when she leaves the barge to see the city, Jean sails away in anger and then falls ill with longing for her. Jean Vigo's only full-length film, made in 1934 before his death at twenty-nine, was cut and renamed by the distributor and only restored later. Its poetic images and tenderness made it a model for generations of filmmakers.

Sinekatalog’s take

Jean Vigo's poetic story of a barge captain and his bride is tender, surreal and romantic. Made shortly before Vigo's death, it is a fragile, much-loved masterpiece of French cinema.Sinekatalog’s own editorial review – not a user or critic quote.
