Plot

In a French courtroom, a jury is chosen to decide the case of Elza Lafarge, a woman accused of killing her terminally ill lover with an overdose. As the jurors prepare to vote, the film shows us their private lives and prejudices, and the doubts that surround the idea of mercy killing. André Cayatte's 1950 film, which won the Silver Lion at Venice, is a thoughtful examination of the justice system and of how personal histories colour verdicts.

Sinekatalog’s take

André Cayatte's drama follows a French jury deciding the fate of a woman who killed her dying lover, showing each juror's private prejudices. Intelligent and sharp, it won the Venice Golden Lion as a gripping, moral courtroom study.Sinekatalog’s own editorial review – not a user or critic quote.
