Born in Carcassonne in 1909 and dying in 1989, André Cayatte trained as a lawyer before becoming a journalist and film-maker, and many of his films are legal dramas that question the French justice system. Justice Is Done (Justice est faite, 1950), in which a jury discusses the guilt of a woman who killed her terminally ill lover, won the Golden Lion at Venice. We Are All Murderers (1952), an argument against the death penalty, won a special prize at Cannes. He is considered a prime target of the New Wave critics.
