Plot
In Paris in the 1890s, a young carpenter, Manda, falls in love with Marie, a prostitute nicknamed Casque d'Or for her golden hair, who is the mistress of a gangster. A rivalry between Manda and the gang leader, aggravated by the intrigues of a ruthless boss, leads to a duel and a fatal betrayal. Jacques Becker's 1952 film, with Simone Signoret, based on a real criminal story, has a warm sense of the working-class setting, and a heartbreaking last scene.
Sinekatalog’s take
Jacques Becker's Belle Époque romance traces a doomed love between a carpenter and Simone Signoret's golden-haired woman. Atmospheric, sensual and tragic, it is a gorgeous, bittersweet French classic.Sinekatalog’s own editorial review – not a user or critic quote.
