Plot

At a country estate, the aristocrat Robert de la Chesnaye entertains his guests, including his wife Christine, her aviator admirer and his own mistress. Below stairs the servants have their own intrigues. The weekend of hunting and parties turns from comedy to tragedy as the rules of upper-class society collide with real feelings. Jean Renoir's 1939 film was booed and cut by the censors on its release, and is now regarded as one of the greatest films ever made, for its wit and its portrait of a society on the edge of war.

Sinekatalog’s take

Renoir's satire of French high society turns a weekend party into tragedy and farce. It flopped in 1939, was banned, and was later rediscovered as one of the great films.Sinekatalog’s own editorial review – not a user or critic quote.
