Catherine Breillat

Women Directors

Born in Bressuire in 1948, Catherine Breillat published her first novel at sixteen and became a director in the 1970s. Her films deal with sexuality, intimacy and conflict between the sexes, and she rejects the label 'cinéma du corps' sometimes applied to them. Romance (1999) made her internationally known and controversial. She has made Fat Girl, Anatomy of Hell, The Last Mistress (2007), The Sleeping Beauty (2010), Abuse of Weakness (2012) with Isabelle Huppert, and Last Summer (2023). A stroke in 2004 left her left side paralysed.
