Born in Paris in 1889 and died in 1981, Gance was an experimenter who kept inventing new film techniques, from rapid cutting and a hand-held camera to the three-screen Polyvision of his epic Napoléon. His anti-war film J'accuse used real soldiers on leave from the front. Napoléon was heavily cut after its release and was restored in stages over many decades.
