Plot
Louis Feuillade's 1915 crime serial, in ten episodes, follows the journalist Philippe Guérande and his comic ally Mazamette as they pursue the Vampires, a secret band of thieves and murderers in Paris. Led by successive Grand Vampires, the gang uses disguise, poison and acrobatics to commit spectacular crimes, and their most notorious member, Irma Vep, is played in a black bodysuit by Musidora. The Vampires have no relation to the supernatural, but the film's night-time rooftops and mysterious villains were hugely admired, and the serial is a cornerstone of the crime film.
Sinekatalog’s take
Louis Feuillade's ten-part silent serial follows a journalist chasing a masked Paris crime gang. Surreal, thrilling and full of rooftop action, with Musidora as a sinister icon, it is a pioneering landmark of crime cinema.Sinekatalog’s own editorial review – not a user or critic quote.
