Born in Lunel in 1873 and dying in Nice in 1925, Louis Feuillade wrote for the Gaumont company from 1905 and began directing in 1906, becoming its artistic director in 1907. He directed over 630 films, from trick films and comedies to realist dramas, but is best known for the crime serials Fantômas (1913), Les Vampires (1915), Judex (1916) and Tih Minh (1918), which mixed street realism with fantasy and influenced Fritz Lang and Alfred Hitchcock. The Surrealists admired them for their dreamlike Paris.
