Plot

A merchant, lost in a forest, takes a rose from the garden of a ruined castle and is condemned to die by its owner, a terrifying beast. His daughter Beauty takes his place. Gradually she comes to see the gentleness hidden in the beast, who loves her, though she is also drawn to the world she left. Jean Cocteau's 1946 film, with sets and costumes that create a world of dream, and Jean Marais as the Beast, is one of the most poetic of all fairy-tale films.

Sinekatalog’s take

Jean Cocteau's fairy-tale film is a poetic, handmade wonder. Its living candelabras, walls with faces and the Beast's makeup are enchanting, and many later versions borrow from it.Sinekatalog’s own editorial review – not a user or critic quote.
