Born in Tunis in 1960 and raised in Nice, Abdellatif Kechiche was an actor before directing. His films capture long, loose, intimate scenes of food, talk and dance, with young non-professional actors in French working-class and immigrant communities. The Secret of the Grain (2007) won a special jury prize at Venice, and Blue Is the Warmest Colour (2013), a love story between two young women, won the Palme d'Or, which was shared with its two lead actresses. The film was controversial for its explicit scenes and for reports of difficult filming conditions.
