Jean Delannoy

French Poetic Realism and Classical Cinema

Born in Noisy-le-Sec in 1908 and dying in 2008, Jean Delannoy was a prolific French director in what the New Wave critics called the 'cinéma de qualité', the polished literary adaptation that Truffaut attacked. L'Éternel retour (1943), a Tristan and Isolde story written by Jean Cocteau, was a hit during the Occupation. La Symphonie pastorale (1946), after André Gide, won the Grand Prix at Cannes and the acting prize for Michèle Morgan. He also directed Notre-Dame de Paris (1956) and Maigret Sets a Trap (1958).
