Born in Paris in 1955, Philippe Lioret began as a sound engineer and made comedy-dramas about families and children, such as Tombés du ciel (1993). Je vais bien, ne t'en fais pas (2006) was a hit with Mélanie Laurent. Welcome (2009), in which a swimming instructor in Calais helps a young Kurdish boy trying to swim the Channel to reach his girlfriend, was a polemic about French treatment of migrants and won the LUX Prize of the European Parliament.
