Plot
Pépé le Moko, a Parisian gangster, hides from the police in the Casbah of Algiers, a labyrinth of alleys and rooftops that no one can enter without his protection. When he meets a beautiful Parisian woman, Gaby, he begins to long for the Paris he left. The police inspector Slimane, who is waiting for a chance, uses this longing as a trap. Julien Duvivier's 1937 film, with Jean Gabin in a legendary role, was a model for later romantic crime films, including Casablanca.
Sinekatalog’s take
Julien Duvivier's poetic-realist crime film traps Jean Gabin's gangster in the Casbah of Algiers. Moody and romantic, with a fatal pull toward Paris, it influenced Casablanca and gangster cinema.Sinekatalog’s own editorial review – not a user or critic quote.
