Born Alex Christophe Dupont in Suresnes in 1960, Leos Carax is known for his poetic style and tortured portrayals of love. His first feature Boy Meets Girl (1984) began his collaboration with the actor Denis Lavant and the cinematographer Jean-Yves Escoffier. He followed with Mauvais Sang (1986), Les Amants du Pont-Neuf (1991), Pola X (1999), Holy Motors (2012) and Annette (2021), written by the group Sparks, for which he won best director at Cannes.
