Louis Lumière

Early and Pioneering Cinema

Born in Besançon in 1864 and died in 1948, Louis Lumière and his brother Auguste ran a photographic plate factory in Lyon, and together invented the Cinématographe, a camera and projector in one. On 28 December 1895 they held the first public paid screening in the basement of the Grand Café in Paris. Their short films, each about a minute long and shot with a fixed camera, captured scenes of ordinary life, and their operators travelled the world filming and showing them. Louis later returned to photography and colour processes, and the brothers did not believe cinema had a future.
