Born in Paris in 1906 and died in 1996, Marcel Carné was a leading director of French poetic realism. With the poet Jacques Prévert as screenwriter and the designer Alexandre Trauner, he made Port of Shadows and Le Jour se lève, films of doomed love and fatalism in the working-class France of the late 1930s. Children of Paradise (1945), shot in occupied France, is often named one of the greatest French films.
