In the theatre district of 1840s Paris, known as the Boulevard of Crime, the beautiful Garance is loved by four men: the mime Baptiste, the actor Frédérick, the thief Lacenaire and the aristocratic Count de Montray. Their lives and loves play out between the stage and the street. Marcel Carné's film, shot under extraordinary conditions in occupied France with a script by Jacques Prévert, was released in 1945 after the liberation. At three hours, it is among the most celebrated French films.
Sinekatalog’s take
Marcel Carné's epic of theatre life in 1840s Paris, shot during the Occupation, is a magnificent romance. Arletty and Jean-Louis Barrault shine in a rich, poetic film often called France's greatest.Sinekatalog’s own editorial review – not a user or critic quote.
