Patrice Chéreau

Contemporary European Art Cinema

Born in Lézigné in 1944 and dying in Paris in 2013, Patrice Chéreau was one of Europe's leading theatre and opera directors, famous for his centenary Ring cycle at Bayreuth in 1976. As a film-maker he was intense and physical. La Reine Margot (1994), a lavish drama of the Saint Bartholomew's Day massacre, won the Jury Prize at Cannes. Intimacy (2001), a sexually explicit drama set in London, won the Golden Bear and a Silver Bear for Kerry Fox. Gabrielle (2005) was based on a Joseph Conrad story.
