Plot

In 1572 Paris, the Catholic princess Marguerite de Valois is forced to marry the Protestant Henri of Navarre, in a political alliance designed to end religious war. Instead, their wedding is followed by the St Bartholomew's Day massacre. Amid plots, poison and bloodshed at court, she falls in love with a Protestant nobleman. Patrice Chéreau's 1994 film, with Isabelle Adjani, adapted from Dumas's novel, is a sumptuous, violent costume drama.

Sinekatalog’s take

Patrice Chéreau's lush, bloody French costume drama is full of passion, intrigue and the St Bartholomew's Day massacre. Isabelle Adjani is magnetic, and the film is feverish, operatic and sometimes overwhelming.Sinekatalog’s own editorial review – not a user or critic quote.
