Born in Nancy in 1951, Nicolas Philibert is one of the most distinguished French documentary directors, with a patient and humane style. Louis, the Child King (1993) and The Country of the Deaf (1992) are among his earlier work. To Be and to Have (Être et avoir, 2002), which follows a teacher and his pupils in a one-room village school in the Auvergne, was a surprise box-office hit in France. On the Adamant (2023), a film about a floating day-care centre for psychiatric patients on the Seine, won the Golden Bear.
