Plot

A group of astronomers, led by the pompous Professor Barbenfouillis, build a capsule and are fired from a giant cannon toward the Moon. The capsule lands in the eye of the Man in the Moon, and the explorers wander a strange lunar landscape of mushrooms and caves. They are captured by the Selenites, insect-like moon dwellers, and escape back to Earth. Made by the stage magician Georges Méliès, this 1902 short mixes painted sets, trapdoors and hand-coloured frames, and its image of the rocket in the Moon's eye is one of the most famous in film history.

Sinekatalog’s take

Méliès's 1902 short sends scientists to the moon in a capsule that hits the man in the moon's eye. Charming, handmade and inventive, it was a pioneer of special effects and fantasy.Sinekatalog’s own editorial review – not a user or critic quote.
