Marc Caro, born in 1956, came to cinema from comics and design. He drew for the French magazine Métal Hurlant and built the grimy, handmade worlds of the animated and live-action shorts he made with Jean-Pierre Jeunet in the early 1980s, among them Le Bunker de la dernière rafale (1981) and Pas de repos pour Billy Brakko (1983). Together they directed Delicatessen (1991) and The City of Lost Children (1995), two fantasies of rusted machinery, odd faces and tender oddballs, in which Caro's designs and casting gave the films their look. He then went his own way and directed Dante 01 (2008), a science-fiction story set on a prison space station.
