Dario Argento

Horror and the Uncanny

Born in Rome in 1940, Dario Argento began as a film critic and screenwriter, co-writing Once Upon a Time in the West with Sergio Leone and Bernardo Bertolucci. He turned director with The Bird with the Crystal Plumage (1970), which set the pattern for the Italian giallo, a genre of stylish murder mysteries. Suspiria (1977), with its saturated colours, shocking violence and a score by Goblin, made him the most famous name in Italian horror, followed by Deep Red, Inferno and Tenebrae.
