Born in Colobane, a district of Dakar, in 1945 and dying in Paris in 1998, Djibril Diop Mambéty was a stage actor who turned to film with a style of fragmented editing, sound collage and wild invention that stood out in African cinema. Touki Bouki (1973), about two young lovers who dream of escaping to Paris, was only released widely decades later, after restoration by the World Cinema Project. Hyenas (1992), after Friedrich Dürrenmatt's play The Visit, is a savage fable of money and revenge. He planned a trilogy, 'Tales of Little People', and completed two parts.
