African Cinema

Directors from across Africa and its diaspora, who built a cinema after independence and now reach festivals worldwide, with stories of colonial memory, migration, tradition and power.

African cinema was born with independence in the 1960s, when filmmakers set out to tell their own stories after decades of colonial images. Ousmane Sembène of Senegal, often called the father of African film, made Black Girl in 1966, and Youssef Chahine in Egypt, Djibril Diop Mambéty, Souleymane Cissé, Med Hondo and Haile Gerima developed powerful and distinct voices. Festivals such as FESPACO in Burkina Faso have supported the work, but funding and distribution remain hard. A newer generation, including Abderrahmane Sissako, Mahamat-Saleh Haroun, Kaouther Ben Hania and Mati Diop, has brought African cinema back to Cannes and Venice.
