Born in Sfax, Tunisia, in 1945 and dying in 2023, Nouri Bouzid spent four years in prison for left-wing activities in the 1970s, an experience that shaped his films. A leading figure of Tunisian cinema, he addressed taboos such as male sexuality, repression and abuse. Man of Ashes (Rih essed, 1986), in which a man about to marry confronts the memory of sexual abuse by a craftsman in childhood, was a landmark, as was Golden Horseshoes (1989), about an intellectual after his release from jail. Making Of (2006) shows a young dancer drawn to extremism.
