Gaston Kaboré

African Cinema

Born in Bobo-Dioulasso in 1951, Gaston Kaboré studied history in Paris and film at the École supérieure d'études cinématographiques. His debut Wend Kuuni (God's Gift, 1982), a gentle story set in a precolonial village about a mute boy who finds a home, was one of the best known African films of its time and is a model for the style of narrative and visual calm that marked his work. Zan Boko (1988) was about the pressures of urbanisation, and Buud Yam (1997) won the top prize at FESPACO. He later founded Imagine, a film training institute in Ouagadougou.
