Plot
Diouana, a young Senegalese woman from Dakar, takes a job as a nanny for a white French couple, and goes with them to the French Riviera, expecting a glamorous life. In their apartment she becomes a virtual prisoner, treated as a servant, and her isolation and despair grow. Ousmane Sembène's 1966 film, the first major feature from sub-Saharan Africa, is a short, powerful condemnation of colonial attitudes.
Sinekatalog’s take
Ousmane Sembène's landmark film follows a Senegalese nanny trapped in a French couple's flat. Short, stark and devastating, it is among the first major African features and an unforgettable portrait of colonial aftermath.Sinekatalog’s own editorial review – not a user or critic quote.
