Plot

Tony, a rich and weak young Londoner, hires Barrett as his manservant, who looks after the house in Chelsea with great efficiency. Little by little, Barrett's control grows, helped by a girl he introduces as his sister, until the roles of master and servant are reversed. Joseph Losey's 1963 film, with a script by Harold Pinter and a brilliant performance by Dirk Bogarde, is a chilling study of class and power, with a claustrophobic style full of mirrors and staircases.

Sinekatalog’s take

Joseph Losey's class drama sees a butler gradually dominate his weak master. Dirk Bogarde is chillingly good, and Harold Pinter's script and the claustrophobic house make it a sinister, brilliant study of power.Sinekatalog’s own editorial review – not a user or critic quote.
