Plot

Mona, an African-American fashion model on a photo shoot at a Ghanaian slave fort, is transported back in time to a plantation in the Americas, where she becomes Shola, a slave. She experiences the brutality of slavery and sees the beginnings of resistance. Haile Gerima's 1993 film, a landmark of independent Black cinema, takes its title from a West African word meaning to look back in order to move forward.

Sinekatalog’s take

Haile Gerima's drama sends an African-American model on a photo shoot at a Ghanaian slave fort back in time to become a plantation slave. Fierce, angry and sprawling, it is a powerful, independent landmark of Black cinema.Sinekatalog’s own editorial review – not a user or critic quote.
