Plot

In 1881, a tribe in Upper Egypt has been quietly selling antiquities from a royal tomb on the Theban hill. When the tribe's leader dies, his sons must decide whether to continue the trade or to reveal the tomb to the authorities. One of them, Wannis, is deeply troubled. Shadi Abdel Salam's 1969 film, also known as "Night of Counting the Years", is a slow, visually striking meditation on heritage and identity, and is one of the finest Egyptian films.

Sinekatalog’s take

Shadi Abdel Salam's only feature tells of a village selling antiquities from a royal tomb in 1881 and a son who must decide whether to expose it. Hypnotic and beautifully composed, it is a slow, haunting masterpiece of Egyptian cinema.Sinekatalog’s own editorial review – not a user or critic quote.
