Wanuri Kahiu

Women Directors

Born in Nairobi in 1980, Wanuri Kahiu studied in Cape Town and Los Angeles and became a leading voice of the 'Afrobubblegum' movement, which calls for fun, colourful African art that is not only about misery. Her short science-fiction film Pumzi (2009), set in a world after a water war, was shown at Sundance. Rafiki (2018), the love story of two young women in Nairobi, was the first Kenyan film at Cannes, in Un Certain Regard, and was banned in Kenya for its subject matter until a court lifted the ban for a week, enough for an Oscar qualification.
